The HPA’s Top 7 Ways to Make Activism Part of Your New Year’s Resolution:

thehpalliance

2016 was rough. Make 2017 better by resolving to make social activism a priority in the new year. By dedicating just a few minutes a week to a cause that matters to you, you can start to make a big difference in your community and your world, so we here at the Harry Potter Alliance have compiled some of our favorite ways to get started:

  1. Activism starts with staying educated on the issues, so resolve to stay engaged and informed in the new year. Keep up with a variety of credible non-partisan news sources on both the national and local level, and, if you can subscribe to a newspaper to support detailed investigative journalism. For key updates on ways to make a difference on the headlines (and a lot of puns), follow the HPA on Twitter and Facebook.
  2. Resolve to send your local local congressperson an owl about the issues you care about. Aside from voting, contacting your government representatives directly is the best way to make sure they’re doing their job of making your voice heard, and they want to hear from you. You can express a concern, bring an issue to their attention, or even just let them know that they’re doing a great job. Find senators’ contact info here and house representatives’ here. Don’t forget to check out our updated resources and ideas on what to write/talk to your congressperson about and share your awesome action with us @thehpalliance .
  3. Resolve to get hands-on. Make a tangible difference on your local community by joining your local HPA chapter or volunteering at a local charity. Food banks, shelters, community centers, legal aid groups, and countless other organizations rely on volunteer support to make their missions happen, and resolving to donate just a little bit of your time on a regular basis could make a world of difference. Find organizations that are doing work you care about and visit them online or in person to find out how you can get involved.
  4. Resolve to keep communicating openly and honestly about issues that matter, even with people who might not agree. In such a polarized political climate, this simple action might seem like one of the hardest on this list, but that makes it all the more important. Activists know that issues don’t go away if not confronted and that beliefs change only through exploration and challenge. In 2017, step outside the echo chamber, listen, learn, and make your voice heard.
  5. Use your resolution to start a revolution of involvement in your community by starting your own Harry Potter Alliance chapter. Gather a group of friends and join our fun, supportive community of fan activists who believe that the stories we love can inspire and empower real social change. Across the globe, our chapter members are making real social change while gaining valuable leadership skills and having a blast (-ended skrewt) while they’re at it, and you can too.
  6. Resolve to relax. Yes, you read that right: relax. A new year brings new, important work to be done to promote a more equitable society, protect the rights of oppressed groups, and fight against injustice and inequality. A good activist knows that their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being is their most important tool, so resolve to take time for self-care in 2017. Visit Madam Pudifoot’s for a nice cup of tea or just spend some laid-back time with a friend to recharge.
  7. Resolve to keep fighting for what you know is right. In the words of Rubeus Hagrid, “[w]hat’s comin’ will come, an’ we’ll meet it when it does.” 2017 will bring with it new and unforeseen challenges, but, with hard work and some good friends you can face it and make the world a better place along the way. The weapon we have is love, and that’s more than enough to save us all.

Happy New Year.

Love,

The HPA

Our latest interview is with Emmy-winning choreographer and comedienne Kathryn Burns. If there’s dance and it’s funny, she’s probably the one who did it. Kathryn is hilarious and super fun, and makes me thankful once again that we have this podcast which allows us to talk to such awesome people.

Note: A friend of mine recently lost his mother, which got me thinking about this piece. It’s a story of loss, loneliness, and reclamation of the things that matter most. It’s a deeply personal piece for me, and one I was so happy to share with the wonderfully talented artist Elena Vitagliano.

Podcast #79: Bonnie Burton, Author of Crafting with Feminism: 25 Girl-Powered Projects to Smash the Patriarchy

Listen on iTunes | Listen on NerdForALiving.com

In this episode, Wendy and Adron talk with writer Bonnie Burton. Bonnie has been a content creator in the web world all the way back into the early 1990s. She wrote for many early lifestyle and business websites and related publications, like Wired, and Apple’s eWorld. She spent a long stint at LucasFilm, writing for StarWars.com and the official Star Wars Twitter account. Currently, she’s a freelancer for CNET, blogging about entertainment news, weird science, and robots.

Bonnie is the co-host of YouTube series Vaginal Fantasy Book Club. The show also features co-hosts Felicia Day,Veronica Belmont, and Kiala Kazebee. It’s an informal, smutty, wine-soaked discussion of a new genre romance novel each month.

She’s also authored a number of books. Girls Against Girls is a guide for teens dealing with bullying and cruelty among their peers. She produced a number of pop culture arts and crafts books, including The Star Wars Craft Book, and You Can Draw: Star Wars.

Her latest, Crafting with Feminism: 25 Girl-Powered Projects to Smash the Patriarchy, arrives in stores and online retailers on October 18th. It features a forward from Felicia Day. The book contains projects ranging from merit badges to googly-eyed tampon puppets, and takes an enthusiastic, tongue-in-cheek approach to both crafting and defiance of the patriarchy.

We talk with Bonnie about the often not-very-lucrative business of being an author, and supporting writer-y pursuits with other work. She walks us through the pitch process for a crafting book, creating a viable product for existing audiences. And we discuss her long career writing for magazines and websites, from the early days of the web to the current, cluttered blogosphere.

#78: Rob Kutner, Comedy Writer for CONAN, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Listen on iTunes | Listen at NerdForALiving.com

In this episode, we have a really fun chat with comedy writer Rob Kutner. Rob’s television career began on Dennis Miller Live. He then wrote for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as part of a comedy writing team that won five Primetime Emmys during his tenure. Rob then transitioned to the short-lived The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. He carried over with the monologue writing staff as TBS resurrected the show into its current incarnation, CONAN, where he’s been since 2010.

Rob is the author of the satirical end-of-times bestseller Apocalypse How: Turn the End Times into the Best of Times! He also wrote The Future According to Me, which was a bestselling eBook on Amazon.

Recently, Rob has expanded his comedy endeavors to podcasts and comics. His new audio mini-series Runaway Brains is available exclusively on subscription-based podcast service HOWL.

It’s a madcap comedic romp with some big time stars in the cast, including “Weird Al” Yankovic, Mayim Bialik, Michael Ian Black, Dave Koechner, and Ken Jennings (the man known for being one of the most successful game show contestants of all time).

“Weird Al” plays Watson, the Jeopardy-winning supercomputer who must go on the lam with his rival Ken Jennings after becoming entangled in a shadowy world of hackers, Freemasons, TED talks, alien conspiracy theories, the Dark Web, and the International Gay Jewish Lizard Conspiracy. Runaway Brains is a series of 10 bite-sized episodes, all available now at Howl.fm.

Rob has also partnered with Farrago Comics to produce the original series, Shrinkage, illustrated by John Lucas. InShrinkage, aliens have arrived – but not in giant motherships, but instead as nano-scale, radiation hungry brain invaders. The series follows the uber-patriot General Sturge McCrain and brilliant, embittered brain scientist Doctor Lana Percy as they are miniaturized and injected into the cranium of President Dullard. There they must destroy the invasive aliens, while battling the president’s own immune system, before the addled world leader turns the planet into an irradiated buffet for the aliens.

Farrago Comics is a new free-to-read, ad-supported comics app, available now on Apple and Android devices. They have publisher back catalogs from IDW and Valiant, plus other indie pubs and creators. Shrinkage is the first original series created specifically for the service. You can get it all free now at FarragoComics.com.

Adron talks with Rob about his career writing for TV, and how he broke into the late-night comedy business. They also discuss branching out into different media, exploring new distribution models, and how he attracted big names to indie projects.

I had a great chat with Rob Kutner, a monologue writer for TBS’ CONAN. He also won 5 Emmys writing for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. His recently launched audio series features Weird Al Yankovic, Ken Jennings, and Mayim Bialik. He’s a funny guy, is what I’m saying here.

Podcast #77: Alistair1918 Writer/Producer Guy Birtwhistle

Listen on iTunes | Listen on NerdForALiving.com

In this episode, Adron has a great conversation with Guy Birtwhistle, whose film, Alistair1918, debuted at this summer’s San Diego Comic Con International Film Festival.

In Alistair1918, a World War One soldier accidentally time travels to present day Los Angeles. Filthy and penniless, with no way to prove his identity, he struggles to find a way back to his wife in 1918. When a group of would-be documentary filmmakers encounters Alistair, they take interest in his odd story, and attempt to assist him. Even as the soldier’s origin strains belief, though, the situation strains the personal relationships for all involved. Can a few friends barely making ends meet manage to help a man out of time, without tearing themselves apart in the process?

The story is told on a very intimate scale, with just a few characters. It’s an excellent example of how a genre tale can be powered by character and emotion, rather than enormous budgets and special effects.

The film was written and produced by Guy Birtwhistle, who also plays the role of the displaced soldier Alistair. Working on a micro-budget of around $30,000, Guy managed costs with meticulously plotted shoots, and short bursts of production over a year’s time. He gathered a small cast of versatile actors, some of whom also handled production roles. This includes the film’s director, Annie McVey, who stars as “Poppy”. The film also features actors Tom Cano and Amy Motta.

Alistair1918 is available for rental or purchase on Vimeo now.

Guy and Adron talk in depth about the creation process for the film. They discuss the experience of debuting at the SDCC Film Festival. Guy describes his method for dividing production into small sections over time to diminish costs and scheduling issues. He and Adron talk about his career as a working actor in LA. And they explore ways ambitious creatives can make their day jobs work for their endeavors, rather than against them.

Had a great chat with actor/producer Guy Birtwhistle in our latest podcast. I met Guy and the cast of his film, “Alistair1918”, at San Diego Comic Con, where it was debuting as part of the SDCC Film Festival. I really enjoyed the movie! If you’re into indie films, sci-fi, and/or filmmaking, this is definitely one to check out. And Guy has a ton of practical advice for creatives balancing their ambitions with their day jobs.
